Finding a Cell Phone Without All of the Bells and Whistles

Cell phones have clearly come a long way in the past ten years. From basic communication devices with a poor or inconsistent connection to the multi-tasking marvels that we have today, cell phones have evolved a great deal. The typical cell phone now can also connect to the internet, play video, act as a digital camera or camcorder, double as an MP3 player, and provide messaging via text and other modes. In fact, many cell phones can also provide GPS locator functions and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The cell phone has become the all purpose gadget that most people under 40 can't imagine living without. Of course, that's not to say that everyone is equally enamored by all of these developments. There is a contingent of consumers that would really rather just have a cell phone to make voice calls, and nothing else. Some of these individuals are older, but some of them are not. Some of these people merely prefer the simplicity and ease of handling a device with fewer buttons, fewer functions, and less complex navigation.

Of course, those who want a cell phone for making calls only, may also want the lower cost that's associated with such a phone. No bills for text messaging, picture messaging, web access, or anything else associated with data plans could significantly reduce the expenses of the typical cell phone user. No inadvertent downloads and less frequent battery charging due to all of that video are also pluses for those seeking simplicity.

As you might suspect however it can be difficult to locate a simpler cell phone that doesn't have all of these functions. Development and manufacturing tends to follow the majority, which currently wants all the bells and whistles. There are however, a number of places a consumer can look for these more basic phones.

Pay -as-you-go phones

Some of the basic phones designed for calling only are available through providers such as Boost and Tracfone, but even the major cellular companies have some models that don't offer internet access, cameras and so forth. The Samsung T109 and Nokia 2610 for instance can be found via such programs.

Used and refurbished phones available online

Through e-Bay and other sites you can find cell phone models that aren't the newest releases. Phones like the Nokia 6010 and Motorola V197 are examples of cell phones that primarily offer voice calling only.

Phones for kids

There are of course many kids phones that offer voice calling minus all of the extraneous functions. Unfortunately some look like kids phones, but some aren't too bad. The LG LX160 offered by Kajeet is one such phone. Unlocked versions can be found online.

Phones for the elderly

There are a few phones on the market designed specifically for the elderly population which eliminate complex functions and navigation. The Jitterbug is one option but of course it's bulkier and looks different than the average cell phone. Plus you're tied to the service, although if you don't use the phone a lot, the service isn't bad. The other option is the Samsung Knack that looks more like the typical cell phone of today.

While consumers wanting just basic voice calling features don't have a tremendous number of options, they can find phones that will suit their tastes if they're willing to look further than the list of the newest and most popular phones.
